Buddy Holly

Really nice tribute in the Des Moines Register and coverage of the 50th anniversary Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom (hat tip to Dave Menconi).

There are very few artists whose music stands up over time the way Buddy's did - hard to believe that he was only 22 when the plane went down 50 years ago.

The Weather Channel, of all places, had a feature on how the plane's pilot got a preflight forecast that didn't take into account the amount of snow falling between Des Moines and Fargo, the flight's destination. They speculate that the pilot may have become disoriented and, being pretty inexperienced, might not have read his instruments correctly. I have no idea if it's true or not, but the piece also touched on the musical contributions of Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Very nicely done.
