Wall Street Murdoch

I'm not sure I understand the concerns about Rupert Murdoch taking over the Wall Street Journal - I don't think it's possible for their editorial page to become any more conservative than it already is.

It ain't the editorial page we're worried about.

The longstanding jokes about the WSJ have been that 1) you could get two papers in one and 2) that its editorial and op-ed writers don't read what the reporters write.

It has done some exceptional and very honest reporting and remains one of the few organizations at the national level capable of doing so.

Murdoch's record in this area is, to put it politely, discouraging. I don't mean he'll start running Page 3 girls, but influencing the news coverage in such a way that important stories that don't fit into a very narrow pro-biz/pro-capitalism/pro-GOP narrative just won't get done.

I wouldn't object to Page 3 girls in the WSJ myself. And I understand the fears. I've just had a hard time convincing myself that the reporting has been as honest and objective as people say it is - maybe it has been, but I know that given the editorial policy, I look at every news story and try to figure what the angle is. Maybe too cynical.
