NC Buys the Big Penis

(image from UNC-Asheville Special Collections)

The Morris family has finally agreed to sell Chimney Rock to the State of North Carolina for $24M (NC had budgeted something like $15M and the family was asking $55M). It will be added to the Hickory Nut Gorge State Park. We usually make it a point to drive through Lake Lure and Chimney Rock (the towns) on the way back from Asheville and often stop at the Old Rock Cafe overlooking the Broad River and with a great view of Chimney Rock. They've got a lot of the tourist flyers and stuff from the 30s and 40s with the cartoon Chimney Rock that looks unmistakably like a large talking penis. They're too funny - I hope they keep them!

Cautionary tale: "The Last of the Mohicans," whose story is set in the forests and mountains of upstate New York, could not be shot there because the forests of the story's time had been chopped down. So they scouted elsewhere along the Appalachians and found Chimney Rock and its environs, at least for the climactic scenes.

(I'm sure the costs of shooting in union NY vs. nonunion N.C. were a factor, but trying to CGI yourself a convincing Eastern mountain forest 15 years ago would have been harder than it would be today.)

The forests around Chimney Rock are still pretty intact, but if you've been there, you know there are certain limits on camera direction. Let's hope the limits that exist now never grow.
